Geddes Gardeners at the BIG DIG on Wednesday, 15th February 201`2

We have a fourth BIG DIG at Acheson House Courtyard on

 Sunday, 19th February from 11 am to 2 pm. 

We hope to finish the raspberry and gooseberry bushes and the 

pointing there and the pond - we are lining it with clay ( a very messy, but lots of fun, job). 

We also have to prepare some the herb beds.

As you can see from the photos below, gardeners of all ages are welcome.

Also the Herb Afternoon is on Saturday, 18th February from 14:00 to 16:00 at Vocal on 

Johnsons Terrace,north of the Castle.

JEAN BAREHAM launches her book on these hidden gardens and discusses their history, new research on children's gardens created in early twentieth-century slums, and shares interviews with people who garden.

Jean Bareham founded Greenyonder Tours. Jean says: 'I love showing guests all kinds of green space, whether it's a beautiful historic site, a wildlife garden, or a spot of guerrilla gardening.  While researching Hidden Gardens of the Royal Mile I became inspired by Patrick Geddes - a century ago, believing that people in cities suffer from 'nature starvation', he created children's gardens in Edinburgh's Old Town. I've researched these sites and show them in the tour By Leaves We Live - at the same time showing what communities today are doing to create growing spaces around the city.'

Jean Bareham is a qualified English language teacher. 

 

JANE GARVEN, early years teacher at Cowgate Under Fives Centre, will join Jean will at the book event. Jane will talk about an innovative programme which introduces under-fives to nature in Johnston Terrace Wildlife Garden, right in the heart of the Old Town, using an approach called Forest School.

Join the Club

Patrick Geddes Gardening Club was started in 2010 as part of the Edinburgh Old Town Development Trust.  Residents at the lack of private or even shared gardens realised that their only opportunity to garden would need to be collective and communal.  The residents wanted to grow flowers, fruit and vegetables.  They wanted to increase all flora and fauna in the city centre of Edinburgh - our community the Old Town. 

We are always looking for new members of the Club.  You don't have to be a resident of the Old Town to be involved but we would like as many residents as possible to get involved.   Whether you are a complete beginner or a green-fingered expert, there is plenty to do. You don’t need any equipment except old clothes and strong shoes (or wellies). Children are welcome with a responsible adult.

We are part of a partnership to bring Granny's Green into a garden; have a courtyard in the Canongate where we will be growing 17th century flowers, herbs, fruits, nuts and vegetables; we can plant in the flower beds at the Canongate Kirk; some residents want to develop their backgreens and there is even time for some guerilla gardening!

We are organising gardening classes so get involved.
